If You Don't Bring Leverage to the Table, You End Up on the Menu: As the U.S. and China Carve Up the World, Canada Becomes the Main Course

OTTAWA — For half a century, Canada enjoyed the most luxurious real estate in modern history: cushioned by two oceans, insulated by the world’s most powerful superpower, and sustained by an endless stream of raw energy and critical resources. Today, that cushion has worn down to the bare floorboards. Stuck in an escalating economic cold war between Washington and Beijing, Canada has transformed from a vital middle-power arbiter into a diplomatic graveyard—trapped inside a house that is fracturing from the inside out.

The trap was laid long before the current crisis. For decades, successive governments in Ottawa deferred hard choices. Nationally, Canada neglected its military, treating Arctic sovereignty as a rhetorical exercise while relying on American military spending to guard its vast, undefended northern flank. Economically, it allowed its internal productivity to stall, coasting on real estate inflation and resource extraction while losing trade leverage.

Now, the bill has come due on all fronts simultaneously.

To the south, a hostile American administration views Canadian independence not as an asset, but as an annoying loophole. As Washington squeezes trade routes and demands total compliance in its economic containment of China, Ottawa finds itself caught between two fires. Attempts to maintain pragmatic economic ties with Beijing trigger immediate retaliation from the U.S. Yet, leaning fully into Washington’s orbit leaves Canada stripped of its economic autonomy, treated less like a sovereign ally and more like a northern extraction territory.

As external forces press in, the internal federation is giving way. Frustrated by federal climate mandates and decades of Western alienation, Alberta is actively entertaining separation, bolstered by American political figures who openly view a sovereign Alberta as an ideal energy client state. In a bizarre twist of constitutional opportunism, Quebec nationalists signal quiet support for Western secession—not out of solidarity with oil, but because an Alberta departure breaks open the Canadian constitution, creating the ultimate precedent for Quebec’s own exit.

Canada is exploding on the global stage while imploding at home. Washington squeezes the federal government, Beijing tests its diplomatic weight, and the provinces tear at the seams.

---

Canada spent decades believing it could sit comfortably at the table of great powers without paying for a seat—only to discover that when you bring no military force to your borders and no economic leverage to your alliances, you aren't sitting at the table; you're on the menu.
