This whole Lake Ontario issue only identifies and illustrates how incredibly stupid some people are.
What people don't understand is that Donald Trump does this on purpose, just to expose the idiocy and hypocrisy. And those of you reacting are only proving his point.
We have changed the names of streets, schools, roads, buildings, universities, sports teams, government institutions, military bases, parks, mountains, islands, towns, and geographic landmarks.
We've changed terminology for races, ethnic groups, disabilities, occupations, Indigenous peoples, and entire communities. We've changed titles and forms of address. We're told to respect people's preferred names and pronouns, even when they differ from what they were called previously.
Remember the Queen Charlotte Islands? We changed that name to Haida Gwaii. Now they're even talking about changing the name of British Columbia. Almost no outrage.
We call Deutschland, Germany. We call Suomi, Finland. We call Magyarorszag, Hungary. We call Osterreich, Austria. We call Hrvatska, Croatia. We call Shqiperia, Albania. We call Sakartvelo, Georgia. We call Hayastan, Armenia. We call Misr, Egypt. We call Zhongguo, China. We call Nihon or Nippon, Japan.
It doesn't matter what we call these countries externally. Internally, they call themselves what they call themselves, and nobody has a meltdown. Different languages, governments, and cultures have been using different names for the same places for centuries.
We're constantly bombarded with the messaging that names matter, identity matters, language matters, and that people and societies have the right to redefine how they identify. We're consistently told that identity is malleable, not static, and that people can change how they identify and what they want to be called.
But Donald Trump chooses a different name for the way the U.S. federal government identifies Lake Ontario, something that has virtually no practical impact on Canada or anywhere else in the world, and suddenly everybody has a complete meltdown.
And just to point out, the United States borders almost half of that lake. They can call it whatever they like. We don't have to oblige or accept what they choose to name it.
This is no different from Donald Trump deciding to call Canada, Canuckistan. It has no impact on anything anywhere in the world. It only matters if you choose to embrace it. If you don't like it, ignore it and move on. It means nothing.
You can't spend years telling everyone that names and identities can change, while renaming everything from streets and schools to mountains and communities, and then suddenly declare that changing a name is outrageous simply because you don't like the person making the change.
Apparently, changing names and identities is progressive, unless you hate the person making the change.
Grow the hell up. The more attention you give this issue, the more you're proving his point.
Tony Lam's Comments.
Yes Since 2015-2026 Canada has changed everything including our ANTHEM with no such outrage.
